Understanding Pool Filter Pressure – Sand and Cartridge Filters

Share:

Proper maintenance of your pool filter—whether it’s a sand or cartridge type—is essential for safe, efficient operation. One of the most important indicators of filter performance is filter pressure. Here’s what every pool owner should know about the pressure range and how to manage it:

Normal Range

For most pool filters, the normal operating pressure ranges from 10 to 20 PSI (pounds per square inch). This can vary depending on the model and system configuration. It’s important to check your manufacturer’s specifications and establish your pool’s baseline pressure when the filter is clean.

High Pressure

When the pressure rises 8–10 PSI above the normal range, it usually indicates that the filter is clogged with debris and needs cleaning. High pressure reduces water flow, strains the pump, and can damage filter components over time.

Low Pressure

If the pressure is significantly lower than normal, this could point to:

  • A clogged pump basket
  • Low water level in the pool
  • A closed or blocked skimmer line
  • Air leaks in the suction line

These conditions prevent adequate water from reaching the filter.

Dangerous Level

A pressure reading above 25–30 PSI can be dangerous. It may indicate a serious blockage or malfunction. If your system reaches this point, shut it down immediately and inspect or call a professional.

Pressure Increase

A gradual rise in pressure is a sign that the filter is doing its job—trapping dirt and debris. However, once the pressure increases by 8 PSI or more, it’s time to clean or backwash the filter.

Maintenance Procedures

For Sand Filters:

  • Backwash the filter when the pressure increases by 8–10 PSI from the clean baseline.
  • Replace the sand every 3–5 years, depending on usage and water chemistry.

For Cartridge Filters:

  • Clean the cartridge with a hose and filter cleaner when pressure rises.
  • Replace cartridges every 1–2 years, or as needed based on condition.

Regular monitoring of your pool filter’s pressure gauge can prevent major issues and extend the life of your pool equipment. Make it part of your weekly maintenance routine to ensure safe and sparkling clean water.
