The Role of Correct Backwashing and Rinsing the Sand Filter

Share:

Keeping your pool water crystal clear starts with properly maintaining your sand filter. Two important steps in this process are backwashing and rinsing. Let’s break them down.

Backwashing (Cleans the Filter)

Backwashing is the process of reversing the water flow through the sand filter to flush out dirt and debris trapped inside. This helps maintain proper filtration and water circulation.

How to Backwash:

1. Turn off the pump (This is crucial to avoid damage).

2. Set the multi-port valve to BACKWASH.

3. Turn the pump back on and let it run for 2–3 minutes, or until the sight glass shows clear water.

4. Turn the pump off again before switching to the next setting.

Rinsing (Resettles the Sand)

Rinsing helps remove any remaining dirt from the filter and prevents cloudy water from returning to the pool.

How to Rinse:

1. After backwashing, turn off the pump.

2. Set the multi-port valve to RINSE.

3. Turn the pump back on and let it run for 30–60 seconds.

4. Turn the pump off again before switching back to FILTER mode.

Pressure Gauge (Tells You When to Backwash)

The pressure gauge measures the pressure inside the filter. If the pressure rises 8–10 PSI above the normal level, it’s time to backwash.

Sight Glass (Shows When Backwashing is Done)

The sight glass is a small window on the filter valve that allows you to see the water being flushed out during backwashing. Once the water runs clear, you know the filter is clean.

Important Reminder: Always Turn Off the Pump First!

Before switching between BACKWASH, RINSE, or FILTER modes on the multi-port valve, always turn off the pump first. Changing the valve while the pump is running can damage the internal components and lead to costly repairs.

Keeping up with proper backwashing and rinsing extends the life of your sand filter and ensures your pool stays clean and healthy!
